Giving to God?

It’s a common and accepted practice in the church today for the big box celebrity preacher to proclaim to his audience  that contributing to them or their ministry, is “giving to God”.  Even in the small regional church it is implied that scatching a check to the organization is “giving to God”. Is this supported in scripture? I think not.

Now I’m not saying you shouldn’t help or give to your teachers and those who labor for the Lord and don’t forget to entertain strangers(Heb13:2). Most of you have no problem spending $50 for a seat at a Branson show, but  you don’t claim your “giving to God”,  but rather your paying the performer, which is what you’re doing at your wiz-bang religious gatherings.

He has shown you, O man, what is good: And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and walk humbly with your God? (Mic 6:8)

Remember, God will not honor a charitable gift if you get a tax receipt(Matt 6).

  1. Hey Boyd,

Well said but do you think anyone will listen?

  2. Well, giving to God is an issue of obedience. Unfortunately, not too many people give out of obedience. if so, the church would be like the children of Israel who have too much for the house of God to be built (read my blog post about that when my son and I talked about this). However, giving from a person who is not honoring God is a no no. Read Isaiah 1:2-17 and really look at verses 11 and 13. You can read more about this at http://www.RWMinistries.com and click on Blog.

Your correct about the “obedience” however the comparison between the church and Israel is wrong on several fronts. Christians are not commanded to support a temple system like that prescibed in the law of Mose. The old covenant works cannot save anyone now, and had no mercy on a gentile like me anyway, so I’ll follow the new.

    Thanks for your comment.
